Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
Now we will start on our journey of understanding the “A” of faith—What Faith Is! Hebrews 11:1 is the one verse that best defines faith. If you were to ask me, “Bernard, what is faith?” I would simply quote Hebrews 11:1 because it gives us the Bible definition of faith.
Notice that the verse says “NOW FAITH IS...” So he is telling us what faith is. The closer we stay with Bible terminology, the better off we will be spiritually. Trust me, I have done it the wrong way by coming up with my own creative terminology, and I have learned through trial and error to stick with the Word. God is smarter that we are.
Let’s look at how various translators have rendered Hebrews 11:1:
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. New King James Version (NKJV)
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. New American Standard Bible (NASB)
Now faith is the title-deed of things hoped for, the conviction of things which are not being seen. (Wuest-The New Testament: An Expanded Translation)
Faith then, according to the Bible, is the confidence, assurance, substance, and title- deed of things hoped for. Remember, this confidence and assurance is always built on the Truth of God’s Word.
We have said that there are three things you need to know about faith. We are discussing the first thing that you need to know about faith, which is, WHAT FAITH IS. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for. Hope is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the whole Bible, yet it is so simple.
Many confuse faith with hope. Some even say that they are essentially the same, but they are not. Hope is confident expectation. The amplified Bible says hope is joyful and confident expectation! Hope is confident expectation that what you desire will come to pass.
Hope Is Always Future
Now get this please; HOPE IS ALWAYS FUTURE! FAITH IS ALWAYS NOW! Why? Well, what to expect is future, isn't it? Why would you expect something that you already have? Faith is possession NOW; hope is expecting something in the future! Until you can boldly say, “I have it now,” you are not in Bible faith. Hebrews 11:1 says; Now faith is...Notice that both NOW and IS are present tense.
As you pray this you are praying God’s perfect will, because you are praying the Word back to God. Do it in faith and you will see phenomenal results.
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of our understanding being enlightened; that we may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. In Jesus Name, Amen.
